The problem we don't want to face is that the very same arguments that were made against these people were made against blacks, against women, minority religious groups, the poor, the uneducated, you name it. They are stupid, nasty, they can't be trusted, anything negative. There are parts of the world where women still have to leave the house during their period. Where infant girls are left on the river bank, or quietly allowed to die when they are sick. Where girls are raped in the street. The same thoughts that some of us have now were in the mind of those gathering for lynchings of our ancestors as entertainment. The reasons for injustice don't change much, neither does the eventual outcome. Often, those most in the forefront pushing the argument are trying to seem superior, or to impress someone. So take the persecution rhetoric, make up the negative accusation and insert any targeted group you like. But we shouldnt look for sympathy when it eventually includes us....
