Appliance Dumping

Let's be honest CAC, it's not just the questionable retail stores. The largest, most reputable department stores in Jamaica are selling appliances and electronics that are refurbished as well as defective items shipped here (or dumped) from first world markets. New (defective) items from low quality manufacturing markets like Central America and Asia that can't sell those items in the US or Europe are also being sold here. These items are sold for the same or more than the full price you would pay overseas for the same item. This is simply because unlike the US, Jamaican laws don't require those items to be labeled as refurbished or defective when sold to consumers. The current law and lax enforcement can only recommend that consumers "ask the vendor to represent the condition of the item". So it's up to the store to tell you if they feel like. This is the reason for the spike in complaints here. These items are cheaper for the store to import (and ma...

Electricity Theft

If the poorer customers are the problem, why not just let JPS collect a set payment from local gov't for each of these areas, and let the gov't chase them to collect. The politicians know them well, and is them looking votes in these settlements why they exist anyway. The truth is right now it's the paying JPS customers that are covering this. At least if gov't pays it would be spread a little bit more through GCT and other gov't fees and taxes so that these same people would pick up a little portion of their own light bill. -RG Daily Cartoon - Wednesday, December 13, 2017

Golden Krust Owner Suicide

Again. Something not right here. Does this seem to be the woman that drove him to kill himself? Cant swear for anyone but, really? Then it was a few hundred thousand in tax debt? Then it was a few million? For a man already said to be worth US$70 mil.? A few disgruntled employees? Really? The man had started moving Golden Krust to enter the huge African market. He would easily be worth more than US$100 mil. in a couple years. Guys like him have lawyers lining up to help him fight the Tax Feds. Any business owner knows that disgruntled employees grow like weeds in a large business. He would not have got to where he is without being able to deal with a couple of those. So why kill himself? Was it fear that his name would be dragged through the mud by Uncle Sam? Many Jamaicans living in the US complain of being treated like third class citizens (1st. you're black, then you're a foreigner on top of it). Is this what the land of milk and honey holds? When a man who had so muc...
